5.主讲内容简介:

In the US, there are federal courts, immigration courts and state courts, and all make use of interpreters on a daily basis. On any given day, the Hawaii state courts have anywhere from 15 to 30 cases that need interpreters in a variety of languages. This need has driven the courts to focus on the quality of their interpreters in order to give defendants a fair trial in which their right to understand is fulfilled in order to defend themselves.

The University of Hawaii’s Center for Interpretation and Translation Studies (CITS) has been an intrical part of the development of court interpreters, not only in an advisory position to the judiciary, but also in the development and teaching of a 2-day workshop, as well as in offering our own classes to university students and non-university students. CITS has now added a Certificate of Community Legal Interpreter program to its conference interpreter program to help meet the needs of the state.

This talk will focus on the development and present state of court interpreters in Hawaii’s state courts, the national testing standards, and on court Interpreter education in Hawaii.
