Dr Trevor Hay is the author of two biographies, three novels, numerous short stories and a book on Chinese theatre. He has been studying Chinese culture for more than forty years and has recently published two novels. He is an Honorary Senior Fellow of the University of Melbourne. He specializes in intercultural approaches to writing.
His two recent novels (2016 and 2017) derive their titles from classic Chinese novels. A Dream of Red Dragonflies (Australian Scholarly Publishing, 2016) and Letters from a Floating Life (Australian Scholarly Publishing, 2017) echo the titles of A Dream of the Red Chamber and Six Records of a Floating Life, two great Qing Dynasty masterpieces.
The first of these is about the complex and sometimes stormy relationship between a Montsalvat writer-in-residence and his Chinese colleague as they travel the world in search of evidence of ancient contacts between China and the West. The relationship, with its heady mix of mutual admiration and misunderstanding, parallels the centuries old relationship between China and European civilization.
The second book is a ‘fictive autobiography’ in the form of letters to an old friend, written from China, recalling episodes in his childhood, youth and old age, seeking signs and portents that might indicate the meaning of his life. The letters consist of reminiscences, interspersed with events in his daily life as he alternates between sojourns in Guiyang and his cottage in the Australian countryside.
