Founded in 2010, the Research Center for Legal Translation and Interpreting of CUPL has seven sub-sections, i.e. section of English, section of French, section of German, section of Russian, section of Japanese, section of Italian and section of Spanish. The majority of its researchers are faculty members from the School of Foreign Studies, CUPL, and the rest are professional translators and interpreters. In addition, the Center also invites experts and scholars from the United States, France, Croatia, Japan and other countries.
With the objective of promoting theoretical exploration and practical application of legal translation studies, the Center regularly organizes academic exchange activities to discuss the fundamental theoretical and practical topics of legal translation. The International Conference on Law, Translation and Culture (LTC), is a flagship event to legal translation and interpreting sponsored by the Center and the first session was held in 2011. In addition, researchers of the Center have made great achievements in both theoretical studies and practices of legal translation and interpreting, successively undertaken a host of state-level and province-level research projects, projects proposed by the Beijing government, interdisciplinary research projects of CUPL and other research projects; many of them also provide language services for government departments, public security organs, people’s procuratorates and courts, enterprises and public institutions, as well as international seminars on legal issues. Our researchers have also published many monographs, translated books and thesis, and have engaged in the translation of bilingual magazines, such as China Legal Science, China Intellectual Property, China Law, etc.
The Research Center for Legal Translation and Interpreting of CUPL serves as the academic center and practice basement in the field of legal translation in China, as well as an expert pool of legal translation and interpreting, a legal consulting institution, a training base of legal translation talents, and an important platform of communication and cooperation for the translation circles at home and abroad.
